My oldest has been in CA since June 14th visiting her dad.  It has been a long, hot summer around here but when I miss her the most I go back to this picture and remember the day we spent together sitting and looking at the vast ocean before us.  Such a rare, quiet, special moment together with not much to say but so much to take in.   Six more days till she comes home.  Six more days.

I came up with this great idea to make a cd for my mom for Mother’s Day.   I had a blast googling songs about mothers and daughters and motherhood in general.  Did you know the Spice Girls had a Mom song?  It didn’t make the cd cut.  Neither did Boyz 2 Men or Tupac.   But it was nice to know they all loved their mamas enough to write a song.   Here’s my final playlist.   Maybe I’ll elaborate about some of them in later posts.

In My Life from the Providence soundtrack (not the Beatles version… Providence was “our” show)

Thanks to You – Tyler Collins (never heard before my Google search but great song)

Kind and Generous by Natalie Merchant (because she is kind and generous)

The Perfect Fan – Backstreet Boys (what can I say, its a sweet song)

Butterfly Fly Away – Miley Cyrus  (speaks to me in not only a mom way but also as the daughter)

You’re Gonna Be - Reba McEntire  (all about the hopes and dreams a mama has for her baby)

Ride- Martina McBride (because we all should ride)

Somebody’s Hero – Jamie O’Neal (because my mom is my hero of course!)

Slipping Through My Fingers – ABBA (go find my previous post about this one.. sniff sniff)

Baby Don’t You Cry (The Pie Song) from the Waitress soundtrack (perfect lullaby)

Angels – Randy Travis  (another I’d never heard before my search)

Thank You Mom – Good Charlotte (always and forever)

In My Daughter’s Eyes – Martina McBride (duh)

Ready Set Don’t Go – Billy Cyrus & Miley Cyrus  (another tearjerker – we’re sappy people)

Don’t Forget to Remember Me – Carrie Underwood

Pray for You – Sara Evans (lots of country mama songs out there)

You Can’t Lose Me – Faith Hill

The Best Day – Taylor Swift  (makes me all happy, brings back memories, and makes me sad at the same time)

I printed out all the lyrics so she’d have them to look at as she listened to the CD.  Took me hours but I know it wasn’t time wasted.    She’ll cherish it for a long time to come.  Question is, how do I top that next year??

I’ve had a particularly frustrating couple of years between some health battles, a pending move that didn’t pan out, and some other major life changes.   There was a long while where I was in the dark and couldn’t see the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel.   Thankfully that light was not an oncoming train and things are looking up.  There are days now when the smile in my heart actually shows up on my face and I’m sure that’s a relief to everyone around me but no one is more relieved than me, myself and I.   I just saw Martina McBride perform this on TV and fell in love with it.   Its my new mantra.   I’m doing my best to Ride that crazy roller coaster called Life.  Hope you are too!

RIDE – Martina McBride

You wake up from your dreaming
and you don’t want to face the day
You can’t find a reason
to think your world will ever change
You can hide beneath the covers
Or you can run outside head up high and carry on

Life is a roller coaster ride
Time Turns the Wheel and Love Collides
Faith is believing you can close your eyes and touch the sky.
so Shine while you have the chance to shine
Laugh even when you want to cry
Hold on tight to what you feel inside and ride…

It brings you up slowly then shoots you like a rocket towards the ground
it twists you and it shakes you before it turns you upside down
You can’t see what’s around the corner
and You can’t look back, so just live it up and feel the rush

Life is a roller coaster ride
Time Turns the Wheel and Love Collides
Faith is believing you can close your eyes and touch the sky.
so Shine while you have the chance to shine
Laugh even when you want to cry
Hold on tight to what you feel inside and ride…

Ride, ride

So shine while you have the chance to shine
Laugh even when you want to cry
Hold on tight to what you feel inside and ride

Ride, ride!

I told my oldest to see the Hannah Montana movie expecting total cheese.  Instead I laughed.  And I cried.  Twice.   Its all about believing in who you are and staying true to that no matter what.  This song in particular tugged at my heart.  I looked over at my daughter and she was looking right back at me so I know it got to her too.   She is my little caterpillar but she’s turning into a beautiful butterfly before my very eyes.

Butterfly Fly Away lyrics
Songwriters: Ballard, Glen; Silvestri, Alan;

You tucked me in, turned out the light
Kept me safe and sound at night
Little girls depend on things like that

Brushed my teeth and combed my hair
Had to drive me everywhere
You were always there when I looked back

You had to do it all alone
Make a living, make a home
Must have been as hard as it could be

And when I couldn’t sleep at night
Scared things wouldn’t turn out right
You would hold my hand and sing to me

Caterpillar in the tree
How you wonder who you’ll be
Can’t go far but you can always dream

Wish you may and wish you might
Don’t you worry, hold on tight
I promise you there will come a day
Butterfly fly away

Butterfly fly away, butterfly fly away
Flap your wings now you can’t stay
Take those dreams and make them all come true

Butterfly fly away, butterfly fly away
We’ve been waiting for this day
All along and knowing just what to do
Butterfly, butterfly, butterfly, butterfly fly away

Butterfly fly away
Butterfly fly away

The first album I ever bought was Queen – The Game.   I wore it out and knew all the lyrics by heart.  This was by far my favorite song and I still love it to this day.  However, lately I’ve been listening to Michael Buble’s version.   Its still a ton of fun to sing, just in a different kind of way.  No matter whose version is playing, it will always take me back to my Queen album spinning round and round on my Mickey Mouse record player.   Happy Valentine’s Day!   Hope you experience that crazy little thing called love today!

Crazy Little Thing Called Love – Queen

This thing called love I just cant handle it
This thing called love I must get round to it
I aint ready
Crazy little thing called love
This (this thing) called love
(called love)
It cries (like a baby)
In a cradle all night
It swings (woo woo)
It jives (woo woo)
It shakes all over like a jelly fish,
I kinda like it
Crazy little thing called love

There goes my baby
She knows how to rock n roll
She drives me crazy
She gives me hot and cold fever
Then she leaves me in a cool cool sweat

I gotta be cool relax, get hip
Get on my tracks
Take a back seat, hitch-hike
And take a long ride on my motor bike
Until Im ready
Crazy little thing called love

I gotta be cool relax, get hip
Get on my tracks
Take a back seat, hitch-hike
And take a long ride on my motor bike
Until Im ready (ready freddie)
Crazy little thing called love

This thing called love I just cant handle it
This thing called love I must get round to it
I aint ready
Crazy little thing called love

The quality leaves something to be desired but its still fun to see again.  Used to be one of my favorites!

Heed the advice this Holiday season!!
